(16561) Rawls is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 3 November 1991 by astronomers of SPACEWatch at Steward Observatory ( IAU code 691) on Kitt Peak in Arizona was discovered.
The celestial body was named on May 23, 2005 after the American philosopher John Rawls (1921-2002), who taught as a professor at Harvard University and whose main work A Theory of Justice , published in 1971, was one of the most influential works in political philosophy of the 20th century Century applies.
