style

With the album Katatonia largely leave earlier Doom and Death Metal influences behind, but keep their dark and sad style and now also show echoes of Gothic Rock . On Discouraged Ones there is no longer any guttural singing , William York from Allmusic hears similarities to Robert Smith in Renkse's clear voice . In addition to the melancholic vocal melodies, there are some equally melancholic guitar lines and v. a. to hear a lot of heavy riffs , which, like the often slow rhythms, are arranged minimalistically and repetitively.

reception

The album was positively received by the press. William York from Allmusic praises the “subtle melodies, minimalist rhythms and extremely melancholy moods”. In Rock Hard , Discouraged Ones was described as “a class 1A listening experience, marked by melancholy, sadness and gloom”, which “will bring the band a lot of sympathy and catapult them a huge step forward”. Yannick Lengkeek from metal1.info sums it up: "Even if Katatonia may have created 'more significant', 'more poignant' and 'more complex' [sic!] Works, this album is still one of their most important, as it shows like no other, what creative and talented musicians it is, who know how to sweeten some gray rainy day.
