Viva Emptiness is the sixth studio album by the Swedish metal band Katatonia . It was released on Peaceville Records in 2003 .

Creation and publication

After the Last Fair Deal Gone Down the line-up remained stable for the first time after a release. Katatonia toured with Opeth in 2001 , took a longer break in 2002 and recorded a new album at the end of the year. Viva Emptiness was produced by the main composers Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse, mixed by Jens Bogren and mastered by Peter In De Betou. Travis Smith was again responsible for the artwork.

style

Compared to Last Fair Deal Gone Down , Katatonia's signature mix of Gothic Rock and Dark Metal on Viva Emptiness is less catchy. There are still melancholic melodies, heavy riffs and some electronic effects, but the album is overall heavier and more bulky, and the pieces partly show echoes of progressive rock from bands like Porcupine Tree or Tool . The dynamics and the changes between calm and aggressive passages are also pronounced again, but less predictable in the more complexly structured pieces than on the previous album.

reception

This album was also received extremely positively by the press. Allmusic's Thom Yorke describes Viva Emptiness as "intellectually demanding yet musically accessible". Kristian Selm from the Babyblauen Seiten judges: “The tension between hardness, sophisticated rhythms with sometimes weird melodies and lazy, lyrical serenity, paired with harmonious, wonderful vocal lines ensure lasting listening pleasure.” Wolf-Rüdiger from Rock Hard praises: “The band gives gambled away and made her songs multi-faceted and colorful. Great melodies have been provided with great compositional accessories, each piece offers surprising twists, fascinating riffs, clever electronic finesse and a huge vocal spectrum. "The German magazine Visions led Viva Emptiness on its 2019 list of the 55 best Swedish rock albums.
