style

Katatonia's characteristic mix of Gothic Rock and Dark Metal is stylistically linked to Viva Emptiness on The Great Cold Distance . The often bulky pieces contain melancholic melodies, heavy riffs and some electronic effects. Again there are echoes of progressive rock . The dynamics and the alternation between calm and aggressive passages are pronounced again, but more predictable in the sometimes more straightforward structured pieces than on the previous album.

reception

This album was also received positively by the press. Sebastian Hauck from Babyblauen Seiten praises The Great Cold Distance with reservations: “The album is one of the better ones in the band. It's incredibly powerful, the mixture of heaviness and melody is well done, the record is very homogeneous. Nevertheless, you have to make compromises. Above all, the low variability in the vocals and the predictability of the structures contribute to the fact that the album is not as good as it could have been. "However, Tobias Blum from Rock Hard expresses appreciation that it is" characterized by the unique, laconic, melancholy voice of Jonas Renske [sic!], virtuoso instrumental execution and a highly complex songwriting ”. For Kilian Fried from powermetal.de , too , the album offers “a varied mixture of powerful, eruptive and quiet, atmospheric parts”.
