style

Katatonia's characteristic mix of Gothic Rock and Dark Metal is also slightly developed on Night Is the New Day . In the often bulky - but overall a little quieter - pieces there are again melancholic melodies, heavy riffs , electronic effects, a pronounced dynamic and alternation between calm and aggressive passages. In addition to echoes of progressive rock , the guitar walls and sound surfaces now also show influences from post-rock .

reception

The album was positively received by the press. Peter Kubaschk from powermetal.de finds it exciting, but "in the overall impression somehow brittle and aloof". On metal.de is praised: "The songs seem much worked fine, far more delicate and passages as performed on an almost comical way, the ad by the band with strong riff and guitar wall Boliden absurdum, fragile." January Fleckhaus from Metal Hammer sums up: “Katatonia have never been more serene, more mature. Some people may justifiably criticize the more difficult access [...] compared to older albums. It's a quiet album that gradually unfolds its strengths. "
