Tonight's Decision is the fourth studio album by the Swedish metal band Katatonia . It was released on Peaceville Records in 1999 .

Creation and publication

After Discouraged Ones , Katatonia switched from Avantgarde Music to Peaceville Records. Mikael Oretoft left the band, Fred Norrman took over the bass in addition to the guitar. Dan Swanö was hired as a drummer . At the beginning of 1999 they recorded a new album, in addition to music and texts by Nyström and Renkse, a cover version by Jeff Buckley was recorded. Tonight's Decision was produced by the band, Mikael Åkerfeldt acted as co-producer for the vocals again. Travis Smith was responsible for the artwork. Peaceville Records reissued the album in 2000 and 2003 with bonus tracks, and in 2007 on a double LP.

On the album Katatonia continue the development heralded with Discouraged Ones to a mixture of Gothic Rock and Dark Metal that is characteristic of the band . In addition to melancholy singing and guitar melodies, v. a. many riffs that are even harder and heavier than on the previous album, the drum rhythms are more punchy. On Tonight's Decision , however, also quieter pieces found. Overall, the album seems more song-oriented, catchy and mature than Discouraged Ones .

reception

The album was positively received by the press. Allmusic's William York praises the “consistently solid songwriting”. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard describes the compositions on Tonight's Decision as “warm and pleasantly pulsating catchy tunes that get by entirely without kitsch and bombast and live primarily from exquisite guitar work, powerful drumming and truly seductive singing”. Moritz Grütz from metal1.info sums it up: "With 'Tonight's Decision' you have one of the absolutely legendary KATATONIA albums in your hands that should definitely not be missing in any collection."
