Count Michael I. Vorontsov

Michael Larionowitsch Voronzow ( Russian Михаи́л Илларио́нович Воронцо́в ; * July 12, 1714 , † February 15, 1767 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian nobleman and politician .

Vorontsov is considered a favorite of Tsarina Elisabeth , at whose court he worked as a valet before her coronation. In 1741 she became Empress of Russia and, like many other favorites, elevated him to the rank of count and vice-chancellor, who was responsible for foreign policy. He had previously married Countess Anna Karlowna Skawronskaja, a cousin of the Empress, in 1742. After 14 years as Vice Chancellor, Vorontsov succeeded Alexei Bestushev-Ryumin as Chancellor of Russia. As a supporter of Tsar Peter III. he was removed from the high office of the state after his disempowerment by Catherine II . A few years later he died in Saint Petersburg. In order to maintain good relations with Russia, King Friedrich II of Prussia had awarded the Tsarina's influential favorite with the Order of the Black Eagle as early as 1742 .
