Oberthur Technologies is a French, international group of companies. Business areas are the development and production of chip cards , the printing of banknotes , checks , securities and other forgery-proof documents, the production of identity cards such as passports and security systems for cash payments.
history
In 1852 François-Charles Oberthür (1816–1893) founded the Oberthur printing company in Rennes, France. In 1984 security printing was taken over by Jean-Pierre Savare, the other business areas were acquired by other buyers. As a result, several subsidiaries were founded or acquired. Today Oberthur has branches on every continent except Antarctica.

Oberthur's business activities span several sectors, all of them in the security sector.
Card systems
Oberthur not only creates bank and credit cards, but also SIM cards, electronic tickets and chip cards for other areas of application.
Security printing
The security printing is carried out by the subsidiary Oberthur Technologies Fiduciary in five production facilities. According to its own information, the company is the third largest manufacturer of banknotes in the world. The euro bills are printed with the plate code "E", it has already been used for Slovakia (serial letter E), Malta (serial letter F), Cyprus (serial letter G), Slovenia (serial letter H), Finland (serial letter L), the Netherlands (serial letter P), France (serial letter U) and since 2011 also Germany (serial letter X). In 2008 banknotes were printed for more than 50 countries. Oberthur also issues passports, visas, voting cards and driver's licenses.

Oberthur produces - also electronic - passports and ID cards, among other things the biometric ID cards for Morocco and the ID cards for Morocco and Guatemala are printed. ID cards for employees of private companies and governments are also printed. Oberthur supplies the driver's license cards for Denmark, India and Tunisia, for example, and the health insurance cards for France and Spain, for example.
The company is responsible for the production of biometric passports for several European, Asian, African and South American countries.
Oberthur is one of the first main members of the FIDO alliance , which developed the industry standard Universal Second Factor (U2F) for generally applicable two-factor authentication .
Security systems
The development of security systems is taken over by the subsidiary Oberthur Cash Protection . For example, cash cassettes or security systems for ATMs are sold .
