Club Social y Deportivo Xelajú Mario Camposeco , usually just shortened to Club Xelajú MC or in the shortest form Xela , is a Guatemalan football club from the city of Quetzaltenango , which is also known by the Maya name Xelajú .

history

Foundation and club name

The association was founded in 1928 under the name Germania and renamed Asociación Deportiva Independiente de Xelajú (ADIX) in 1942 . With the addition to the name added in 1952, the club honors its former player Mario Camposeco , who is considered the best player in the club's history and who died in an airplane accident in 1951.

Success at the national level

In the season 1957/58 Xelajú won the championship of the second division and rose to the top division for the first time . In their fourth first division season 1961/62, Xelajú won the Guatemalan football championship for the first time. Further championship titles followed in the 1980, 1995/96, Clausura 2007 and Clausura 2012 seasons. Xelajú has also won the Guatemalan Cup twice in the 1972/73 and 2010 seasons.

Success on an international level

The greatest success at international level was reaching the finals in 1982 for the Copa Interclubes UNCAF , which Xela lost to the Honduran club Real España (1: 2 and 0: 0).

So far, Xelajú has participated a total of five times in the CONCACAF Champions League , the most important CONCACAF competition, and at best qualified for the second round in the first four appearances. You could only prevail against rather "nameless" opponents like CD Vida from Honduras (1963), Real Verdes from Belize (1997) and Tauro FC from Panama (2007/08), before the Mexican one in the 2012/13 season Record champion Chivas Guadalajara for the first time one of the well-known clubs from the field of CONCACAF could be eliminated.
