Mario Camposeco (born August 6, 1921 in Quetzaltenango , † June 17, 1951 in Quetzaltenango), also known by the nicknames El Caballero del Deporte and El Pelé de Guatemala, was a Guatemalan football player on the position of a striker .
Life
Camposeco began his career in 1938 with his hometown club América de Quetzaltenango and later moved to city rivals ADI Xelajú , whose team captain he became.
In 1943 Camposeco was called up for the first time in the national team when they took part in the CCCF championship and finished second behind hosts El Salvador. He also took part in the VI football tournament for his country. Central American and Caribbean Games , which were held in Guatemala City in 1950 .
Immediately after a game played on June 17, 1951 against the capital club CSD Comunicaciones , in which Camposeco had scored all three goals for the 3-0 victory of his team, he was in an airplane on the way to an international match. Just a few minutes after take-off, the aircraft lost a lot of altitude as a result of machine damage and finally crashed over the La Transfiguración district . Neither the pilot nor Camposeco survived the accident.
In memory of the player, his name was added to the club name of Club Xelajú in 1952 and the city's football stadium was named after him.
