Julio César Cortés , full name Julio César Cortés Lagos and partly also as Julio Cortez , (born March 29, 1941 ) is a former Uruguayan football player and coach.
Player career
society
The El Pocho called Cortés came from the youth team (Cuarta) Peñarols and played after the stopover Sud América at the beginning of his career in 1962 at Club Atlético Cerro . He was still under contract there in mid-1963 when he took part with the Albiceleste on the club's international tour through Europe, the Soviet Union and Africa from May to July of that year. After engagements at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata and Rosario Central (1965), Cortés moved back to Montevideo as part of the Sasía transfer and was in Peñarol's ranks from 1966 to 1971 . During this period, the Aurinegros were Uruguayan champions in 1967 and 1968 and won the Copa Montevideo in 1971 . In addition, Cortés and his teammates won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup against Real Madrid in 1966 in the finals and playoffs against River Plate . In the eleven of 1966, the versatile Cortés, together with "key player" Pedro Rocha in the so-called Volante positions, formed a decisive switchover point in the Aurinegros game that influenced the pace of the game .
In 1970 his team was only defeated in the finals of the Copa Libertadores, in which Cortés, however, in contrast to the previously mentioned finals, was not used.
National team
The midfielder was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team , with which he took part in the soccer world championships in 1962 , 1966 and 1970 and was used in eleven games (1/4/6). He completed a total of 30 international matches from May 2, 1962 to June 20, 1970, in which he scored a total of three goals.
Coaching career
After his active career, Cortés works as a trainer. In this role he first worked at Cobán Imperial . With Deportivo Suchitepéquez , where he worked from 1983, he was then Guatemalan champion in 1983. He then won the Copa de Verano 1984/85 with Juventud Retalteca . As coach of the Guatemalan national team , he took part in the Pan American Games in 1987 and also reached the first qualifying round for the 1988 Olympic Games with the national team. In 1993 he was the coach of Deportivo Saprissa . In May 2000 he took over the position of national coach again, replacing his compatriot Carlos Miloc . With the Guatemalans he won the VI the following year. Copa Naciones UNCAF . Also in February 2003 during the qualification for the Gold Cup 2003 he still held this office.
Other clubs he coached over time were Comunicaciones , Xelajú , Azucareros and Aurora FC . In June 2004 he signed with CD Águila and was released on the 11th match day. His balance sheet showed a gain of only 36% of all potential points to be won. From March 2005 he took over responsibility at Deportivo Jalapa . Cortés' wife also died that year. In July 2007 he was in Costa Rica with San Carlos as the responsible trainer on the dugout.
