The Rice-Eccles Stadium is a college football - stadium in the American US city Salt Lake City , capital of the state of Utah . It is located on the campus of the University of Utah and serves mainly as a venue for the NCAA - college football teams of the Utah Utes ( Pacific-12 Conference ).
history
The stadium was originally in 1927 for 133,000 dollars built as Ute Stadium. The first college football game took place on the opening day, October 1, 1927, between the Utes and the Colorado Mines (40-6). In 1972 the facility was expanded. 1995 Salt Lake City won the bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 2002 Winter Paralympics . The old stadium made of wood , concrete and earth, almost fifty years old, was unsuitable for the major events. Construction of the new US $ 50 million stadium began in November 1997 and the opening of the facility was celebrated on September 12, 1998. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Games and the Winter Paralympics were held in 2002. During this time it was named "Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium".
From 2005 to 2008, this was football - franchise Real Salt Lake from the Major League Soccer (MLS) located before in the Rio Tinto Stadium to Sandy moved. In 2007 the opening ceremony of the Winter Deaflympics took place in the Rice-Eccles Stadium. The first Nitro World Games were held on July 16, 2016 at the Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Occasionally there are also concerts in the stadium.
