He has a sister named Becci and an older brother named Jimmy (* 1983), who was also a college soccer player at Loyola Marymount University when he was older . After he started playing soccer in his childhood, he went to Lewis-Palmer High School in Monument , Colorado at an advanced age , where he also spent and grew up much of his childhood. At a young age he played with Travis Myernick, the son of the football player and coach Glenn Myernick , who died in 2006 at the age of 51, in a youth football team. At high school, the tall Burling was not only on the soccer team in the school sports department, but was also an equally successful basketball player . He was a letterman in football for all four years and also a four-time letterman in basketball.

Furthermore, he was the team captain of the soccer and basketball teams in his junior and senior years . Loyola Marymount University

2003 rookie year

As early as his rookie year, Burling played for the men's soccer team of the Loyola Marymount Lions , the name of the sports department at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), in all 20 league games, and he was on the pitch in all of these games from the start. At that time, as in his earlier youth, he was used as an offensive player and by the end of the game year had a record of three goals and five assists. He had contributed the third most assists of his team this year and also achieved the third most scorer points for the Lions this year. Because of his achievements, elections for the Falcon Invitational and the LMU Fall Classic All-Tournament followed this year . In that year he also came to the side of his older brother Jimmy, who like Bobby is just as successful a basketball player and who continued to practice this sport in college. Bobby Burling, who had chosen Business Marketing as his main course of study , had decided before starting his studies to work exclusively for the soccer team. This year he received a WCC Honorable Mention for the first time .

2004 sophomore year

In the following sophomore year 2004 Burling again completed all championship games of his team, where he acted as a regular player in 21 of the 22 matches from the start. In the conference and in the overall standings, he ranked fifth-best goalscorer of the Loyola Marymount Lions, having contributed two goals and three assists in conference games and three goals and four assists in the overall standings. An individual honor this year was his election to the NSCAA Far West Region Third Team . In the first half of this game year he was also often on the side of his older brother, who played as a defender, used; However, Jimmy Burling injured himself as the season progressed and much for the majority of the second half of the season from the ongoing game. In the game-free time at the university, Burling was also used in men's football for the first time in the game year 2004, when he completed 14 league games for Colorado Springs Blizzard with play in the fourth-rate USL Premier Development League and scored a goal. His team, which played 18 championship games that year, ranked seventh of nine places in the final ranking in the Heartland Division , one of the two leagues of the Central Conference and one of a total of eight divisions in the USL PDL this year.

Junior year 2005

In his junior year 2005 he was able to increase his performance again significantly, where he was the second best scorer of his team with five goals and four assists and the resulting 14 points. This year, Burling, who was on the pitch in 16 of his 19 league appearances from the start, received a WCC Honorable Mention and was already in the top 10 college careers in his university's record book this year in the categories of goals, assists and scorer points . His most successful game for him personally he completed on September 5, 2005, when he contributed two hits and one assist in a game against the University of North Florida . Following that win, he received a UC Irvine College Classic All-Tournament Award. In addition, he led his team this year with a rate of 68.6% shots on goal and was also the leader in this ranking with the Loyola Marymount Lions with 24 shots on goal. With 35 scorer points, he ranked second within the team in the 2005 game year. In September 2005, Bobby Burling was named LMU / Enterprise Male Student-Athlete of the Month .

Senior year 2006

After he appeared as a striker for the Loyola Marymount Lions for three years, he was converted into a defender in his final senior year in 2006 by his coach, former US national player Paul Krumpe . Burling, who is considered to be strong, aggressive and versatile, who also has an eye for the goal and should be incredibly fast for his size, was used as team captain and regular. As a central defender , he achieved 13 points scorer in 2006, and this year he even led the Lions in this ranking. He was also the team's top scorer this year, along with Brad Stisser , who scored just as many goals, with four goals and was also the best assists for the Lions this year with five assists. For these achievements he was elected to the WCC First Team for the first time after he received “only” an honorable mention from the WCC in 2003 and 2005 . Other unmentioned individual successes in his college career include the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, the LMU Male Athlete of the Year 2006 election, and the 2006 Harvard Invitational election After being elected to the NSCAA Far West Region Third Team in 2004, he was elected to the NSCAA Far West Region Second Team in his senior year 2006 . While his brother was Letterman of the Lions four times in a row , Bobby Burling was a Letterman in at least 2003, 2004, and 2005.

In the LMU Record Book

In the ranking with the most scorer points in a college career at the LMU, Burling is currently (as of 2017) with 48 scorer points still in sixth place and has only been pushed back one place in the last year after having been up to at this point was fifth overall. With the 15 hits he scored in the course of his college career, he still ranks ninth in the record book of his university (as of 2017). With 18 assists in a college career, he is currently (as of 2017) together with two other players in fourth place in the assist rating, after having been the only player in third place for years. In the ranking with the most game-winning goals in a college career, he ranks fourth with six goals since leaving college. The 109 shots fired in the course of his university career currently (as of 2017) still bring him ninth place; With 80 completed league games, he is currently (as of 2017) still the second most used player in the history of the men's soccer team at the Loyola Marymount Lions; He shares this success with another player and is one game behind the current leader Phil Da Silva. For several years, Bobby Burling was the sole leader in this ranking.

Via the MLS SuperDraft 2007 into the MLS

After graduating from college in December 2006, Bobby Burling was drafted only a short time later in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as the 45th pick in the fourth round for the Los Angeles Galaxy major league soccer franchise . He was after Arturo Torres (2002) the second player in the history of the Loyola Marymount Lions, who was drafted to LA Galaxy. After he was not offered a contract by the California franchise , he subsequently moved, three months later, to league competitor CD Chivas USA , with whom he had been training since the end of March 2007. In the game year 2007 , however, he was not used in any league game of his team, which completed the season in first place in the Western Conference and in second place in the combined final table. Even in the play-offs at the end of the season, the tall defensive player did not get any minutes.

It was not until the following game year, 2008, that Bobby Burling found his way into the team and completed 20 of 30 possible games in regular time, of which he was a regular player from the start in 18. As runner-up to receive the MLS Supporters' Shield in 2007, the team was qualified for the Preliminary Round for the CONCACAF Champions League 2008/09 , but was defeated there by Tauro FC from Panama with a total score of 1: 3 from round trip and did not make it to the final round. Here Burling came in the second leg over the full game in the defense row of his team to use. With the CD Chivas USA he ranked second in the final ranking of Major League Soccer 2008 in the Western Conference and fifth in the overall table. In the following playoffs, the team was eliminated again in the first game, the Conference Semifinals against Real Salt Lake ; Bobby Burling came on a brief assignment in one of the two play-off games.

Switch to the San José Earthquakes

In the MLS game year 2009 , he was out for a few months and only came on July 12 for his first league appearance that year. Then Burling completed two more league games for the Chivas, before he was traded to the San José Earthquakes on September 11, 2009 in exchange for a third-round pick MLS SuperDraft 2010 . The general manager of the Earthquakes, John Doyle , described him as a versatile player who can be used on both the defensive and the offensive. Doyle also praised the strength and assertiveness of the 1.96 m tall defense line. Subsequently, Burling was used in seven championship games for the Quakes , where he was already in the starting lineup in six games. In the final standings, the franchise from San José in California took eighth and thus last place in the Western Conference and was only 14th of 15 places in the overall table, with only the New York Red Bulls achieving even fewer points.

He spent most of the 2010 game year as a regular, with 16 appearances in the starting line-up in his 18 championship appearances in the regular season. This year he also scored his first goal and made his first assist in Major League Soccer. His first goal in the top North American football league he scored on May 9, 2010 in a 4-0 home win over the New York Red Bulls. In the final classification of the regular season, the Earthquakes finished 6th in the Western Conference and 8th in the overall table. Because of this league placement, the team also made it into the season-closing play-offs, in which they made it to the Conference Finals and only lost 1-0 to the later MLS Cup winner Colorado Rapids . Due to the placement in the overall table, the franchise also qualified for participation in the North American SuperLiga of 2011, which was subsequently no longer held.

After he had already been promoted to a regular player in the previous year, Burling was also used in the 2011 game year under his coach Frank Yallop as a regular in the defense chain. The 52-time Canadian international used him in 23 of 34 possible games in regular time, where he started from the start in all 23 games and remained goalless even this season, but contributed an assist for his teammates. In the first two months in particular, he sat almost exclusively on the bench and was not used; it was not until May 2011 that he was considered again as a regular employee. At the end of the season Burling finished seventh with his Quakes in the final table of the regular season and 14th place in the overall table. Immediately after this game year, the 1.96 m tall defender was given another franchise.

Return to CD Chivas USA

Via the MLS Expansion Draft 2011 , which was held on November 23, 2011 for the Montreal Impact expansion team , Burling came as the fourth pick after Brian Ching , Zarek Valentin and Justin Mapp for the new franchise from Canada. Since the people in charge of Montreal Impact then did not sign him, his MLS player rights, which were still with Montreal, were exchanged in July 2012 for an international player roster for 2013 with the CD Chivas USA. With the Chivas he had already been in trial training for two weeks and had played two games in the MLS Reserve League . Since he had no prospect of a commitment at Montreal Impact for months before, he tried his luck at several European clubs and was in conversation with the Kickers Offenbach from Germany and VV St. Truiden from Belgium , among others . At the last-named Belgian first division club , he also had a longer trial training session in April / May 2012 and during this time he stayed with his compatriot and former teammate Sacha Klještan . After Belgium he wanted to try his luck in Denmark too , but soon afterwards he returned to the United States without an offer of a contract. After his rights were transferred to the Chivas, as mentioned earlier, he was officially signed in mid-August 2012. In the remainder of the 2012 game , the central defender, under coach Robin Fraser , made three championship appearances, all of which he played through from the start and over the full 90 minutes. He was also used in a game of the reserve team in the MLS Reserve League. In the final ranking, the franchise took ninth and thus last place in the Western Conference and 18th out of 19th places in the overall table; only Toronto FC was worse that year.

In the following game year, 2013 , he did not find his way into the team until June and before that he was mostly not in the squad or only made very few appearances. The reason for this was, among other things, an injury that he was still recovering from. From June he was then back in action as a regular and by the end of the regular season had a record of 23 league games, 18 of which he started from the start. He started this year with the Chivas for three different coaches; on José Luis Sánchez Solá the interim coach followed Sacha van der Most van Spijk , in turn by the Mexican José Luis Real followed. Goals or assists were missing this year; in addition, he also played two games for the reserve team. For his achievements in the fifth round he was elected to the MLS Team of the Week , among other things . In the final ranking, the franchise did not get beyond last place in the Western Conference and also ranked 18th in the overall table, with only DC United achieving even fewer points. This year, the Chivas also had by far the lowest average attendance in the entire league, which, in addition to the lack of success, contributed to the early dissolution of the franchise. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2013 , the team made it to the fourth round and lost to the Carolina RailHawks from the second division.

His expiring contract with the Chivas was extended to the 2015 season in autumn 2013. After starting the 2014 MLS game year as a regular under the new coach Wilmer Cabrera , he dropped out for several weeks from the beginning / middle of July after a knee operation and only celebrated his return to the team on September 1, although he was still there was used as a substitute. He then quickly worked his way back up to the core strength of the central defense and at the end of the season he had 22 championship appearances, 20 of which he was on the pitch from the start. There was also a goal this year, which he had scored as the winning goal in the season opener of his team, in a 3-2 home win over Chicago Fire . In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2014 , the team did not make it through the fourth round and was again defeated by the Carolina RailHawks from the second division. The early dissolution of the franchise was already foreseeable at the beginning of the season after the owner of the franchise, the Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara , sold the CD Chivas USA to Major League Soccer in February 2014. The season ended Burling with the team still in seventh place in the Western Conference and 16th place in the overall table and was then, after the dissolution of the franchise at the end of the season, on the MLS Waiver Draft to the Colorado Rapids drafted after he was not selected by any other franchise in the 2014 MLS Dispersal Draft .

Old hand at the Colorado Rapids

Eleven years after he last played for a men's team from Colorado, the 1.96-tall center- back came back to the state he grew up in in 2015 . Under coach Pablo Mastroeni , he quickly became a regular in the defensive line, but did not make a notable competitive debut for the Rapids when he was sent off in the game against Philadelphia Union on March 7, 2015 after two clear offenses with the red card . This was also the first red card of all teams in the 2017 game year. After only two goals in 119 appearances in regular time in his eight years in Major League Soccer, he scored two goals this year (one against the Columbus crew on August 8, and once against DC United on 12 September). In addition, he was one of five Colorado Rapids players to wear the captain's loop that year . In the regular season Burling was used in 22 championship games, each of which he was on the lawn from the start. As usual with the Chivas, he only finished one place at the bottom of the table with the Colorado Rapids. After the regular season this was the tenth and last place in the Western Conference and the 19th and penultimate place in the overall table. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2015 , the franchise made it to the fifth round, the round of 16, and was eliminated there with 0: 1 against league rivals Houston Dynamo from the current competition. At the Rapids, which had the lowest average attendance of all 20 teams this year, his contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended or the option in the contract was not drawn.

In January 2016, the Colorado franchise re- signed Bobby Burling, who had meanwhile become a free agent . Continuing as a core force, Mastroeni always started from the start, with Burling not pausing for seven championship games until June after he underwent another knee operation during the Copa América Centenario , which led to game-free weeks in the MLS. In the time of his absence, the Rapids won two games, drew four games and lost one match. On May 21, 2016, he came in a 1-0 away win over Seattle Sounders FC for his 150th appearance in Major League Soccer. Due to a turf toe , a relatively rare sports injury in which the short flexor tendons of the big toe tore in the area of the sesame bones, he was again out of six championship games this year. During this period of his absence, the team achieved four wins, but they also lost twice. This year he also scored a goal in the regular season and was used by the end of this in 16 championship games, all of them from the beginning. With the Colorado Rapids he completed a very successful season compared to the previous year and made it to second place in the final classification of the regular time and took part in a season-closing play-off phase for the first time in years. The Rapids only narrowly defeated Los Angeles Galaxy in the Conference Semifinals and rose to the Conference Finals , in which they were ultimately defeated by the eventual winner of the MLS Cup , Seattle Sounders FC, with a total score of 1: 3. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2016 , the team was only eliminated from the current tournament in the round of 16 after extra time with 1: 2 against FC Dallas .

The now 32-year-old made his season debut in 2017 on March 18, 2017, when he came on for the injured Axel Sjöberg in a 2-2 home draw against Minnesota United .
