Career
His career began in the Center in his home town at the Chilliwack Chiefs , where he played from 1991 to 1994. In his second and third years, Ast was the captain of his team. In the next two years Ast ran for the selection of the University of British Columbia in the game operations of the CIAU .
For the 1996/97 season he made his professional debut and played in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers , and in the American Hockey League with the Syracuse Crunch . Then Ast moved to the International Hockey League to the Long Beach Ice Dogs . There he came with his team to the semi-finals of the playoffs , where they lost to the eventual champions Chicago Wolves . He completed two more seasons for the Ice Dogs and moved to the Manitoba Moose for the 2000/01 season . With the Moose he again lost to the Chicago Wolves in the semifinals. He then signed with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . There he just missed the play-offs in his second year . During his time in the Sauerland , he was one of the team's top performers and one of the most successful face-off players in the league. He then signed a contract with the league competitor ERC Ingolstadt for the 2003/04 season . In six years he became the best DEL goalscorer in Ingolstadt and was two top scorer of his team. This was able to reach the play-offs five times in a row and made it to the semi-finals in 2004 and 2005. On August 8, 2009, the ERC Ingolstadt announced that Ast had to end his active career for health reasons. His jersey number 18 was banned from ERC Ingolstadt because Ast was the first player to score 100 DEL goals for the Panthers.
