Thebais (literature)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thebaïs (Θηβαΐς) is the title of several poetic and literary adaptations of the saga around the Greek city of Thebes .

Of these, only the Thebais in Latin by Publius Papinius Statius from the 1st century AD has survived in full. There are fragments of several Greek works, such as the epic from the Epic Cycle ( Epikos kyklos ), the authorship of which was disputed ( Homer or Antimachus of Teos ), and which told the story of the war between the brothers Eteocles and Polynices and was considered part of the Theban cycle . The Attic tragedians processed materials from it, e.g. B. Aeschylus (Thebes Trilogy) and Sophocles . The relationship between the epic Thebaïs of Antimachus of Colophon and the Cyclic epic is difficult to determine.
