Bruno Cirillo (born March 21, 1977 in Castellammare di Stabia ) is a former Italian football player .

Club career

Bruno Cirillo began his professional career at Reggina Calcio . In order to collect match practice, he was awarded to the fourth division AS Tricase from 1996 to 1998. When he returned to Reggina after these two years, he immediately established himself as a regular at the second division. At the end of the 1998/99 season , the defender was able to celebrate promotion to Serie A with his team . In Reggina's club history, this was the first promotion to the top division at all. They were also able to hold their own in the first division and reached 12th place in the table at the end of the season. The young defender Cirillo always knew how to convince with good performances and thus attracted the interest of other clubs. For the following season he was signed by the top club Inter Milan . Under coach Marco Tardelli he played one season in defense with world stars like Laurent Blanc and Iván Córdoba . Cirillo also gained his first international experience in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup . Here he failed with Inter at the later finalist Deportivo Alavés .

In 2001 he moved to the relegated US Lecce in order to be promoted back to the first division with this team a year later. In the following three years, Cirillo moved on loan again to his youth club Reggina Calcio and AC Siena . For the 2005/06 season, the Italian then went to the Greek top club AEK Athens . There he and his team were runner-up behind Olympiacos in both seasons and played in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2006/07 . In the summer of 2007, Cirillo announced his move to the Spanish first division club UD Levante . Due to financial difficulties at Levante, he returned to Reggina Calcio again in the following winter break, initially on loan, then finally after the season. But he couldn't prevent Reggina's relegation to Serie B in 2009 either. After the season, the defender moved again to Greece, where he worked at PAOK Thessaloniki until 2012 . Under coach Fernando Santos , Cirillo and his team reached third place in the table and qualified for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League . There he failed with PAOK after two draws and due to the poorer goal difference at the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam . In the subsequent UEFA Europa League , he and his team made it to the round of 32, where they were eliminated from the Russian representative CSKA Moscow . In the league, meanwhile, they reached fourth place and qualified again for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League . After being unbeaten first in the table in the group stage, Cirillo and his team failed again in the round of 32, this time to Udinese Calcio from his native Italy. In the league, PAOK was fourth again this season.

For the 2012/2013 season, Cirillo moved to the Cypriot club Alki Larnaka and then on January 28, 2013 to the French third division club FC Metz . After his brief stint in France, the Italian signed another contract in Greece and switched back to AEK Athens, who had previously voluntarily relegated to the third division due to major financial problems. With the team Cirillo succeeded in the immediate promotion to the second Greek division. On August 21, 2014, the defender was signed up as a player by the newly founded Indian club FC Pune City . His coach there was compatriot Franco Colomba , who was already his head coach at Reggina Calcio. After six months in India, Bruno Cirillo finally returned to his old place of work in Reggio Calabria . He helped the club, which had meanwhile been relegated to the third division, to stay in the second half of the season and relegation against ACR Messina before ending his career in summer 2015.

National team

In 1999 and 2000 Bruno Cirillo was part of the Italian U-21 national team because of his good performances . With this team he was 2000 U-21 European football champions . The team also included Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo , for example . The defender Cirillo was also part of the squad at the 2000 Summer Olympics .
