The Yuba Bharati Krirangan ( Bengali যুব ভারতী ক্রীড়াঙ্গন IAST yuba bhāratī krīṛāṅgan ; German  sports facility for Indian youth ; also known as Salt Lake Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Bidhan Nagar district (Salt Lake City) of Calcutta , West Bengal state . The full name of the stadium is Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan .

history

The facility was inaugurated on January 25, 1984 by Jyoti Basu , then Chief Minister of West Bengal. With its 120,000 seats in a three-storey facility, the arena was the third largest stadium in the world after the Strahov Stadium in the Czech Republic and the May 1st Stadium in North Korea until the renovation in 2014 . It is owned by the government of West Bengal and is mainly used as a venue for football matches and athletics competitions. The arena has an area of 309,200 m 2 . The artificial turf pitch measures 105 × 70 meters. The floodlight system with its 624 metal halide lamps , each with two kilowatts, offers an illuminance of 1,500 lux . It is roofed with a free-swinging tubular steel construction, which is covered with aluminum sheets.

In 1987 the track and field competitions of the South Asian Games took place here. A tartan athletics facility was relocated for this in 1986 . The four-time Olympic athletics champion Emil Zátopek laid the foundation stone on February 22 of that year. In addition, two large video walls were installed in the stadium in 1987 . In addition, various national competitions are held in the stadium.

Regular major events include the city derbies of Kingfisher East Bengal and Mohun Bagan AC , two of the most successful teams in Indian football. The derby on July 13, 1997 attracted a record crowd of 131,000 visitors to the stadium. It is also home to two other I-League clubs from Calcutta, the Mohammedan Sporting Club and Prayag United . The Indian national soccer team often plays its home games in the stadium. From the newly founded Indian Super League (ISL), Atlético de Kolkata has been playing its home games at the Salt Lake Stadium since 2014.

In the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Oliver Kahn played his last professional game in front of a sold out house on May 27, 2008 as part of a trip to Asia for FC Bayern Munich . FC Bayern Munich won against Mohun Bagan SC with 3-0 goals that evening. The national soccer teams of Argentina and Venezuela met for an international match on September 2, 2011 . With a goal in the 67th minute from Nicolás Otamendi , after a corner from Lionel Messi , Argentina won 1-0 goals.

renovation

In the spring of 2013, after almost 30 years, the largest stadium in India was in dire need of renovation. For this reason, the Secretary General of Mohun Bagan SC wrote to the Sports Minister of West Bengal asking for immediate investments. The artificial turf playing surface caused injuries to players. Spectators would not have access to working toilets or clean water. There were several power outages in the stadium during games , which had no major impact. If there were a mass panic in the dark during a power failure, this could lead to a catastrophe. Due to the conditions, more and more games are being moved to other stadiums. Renovation was also necessary in view of the Indian Super League , which started in 2014, and the stadium-based Atlético de Kolkata football franchise . In addition, the U-17 soccer world championship will take place in India in 2017 and Calcutta and Yuba Bharati Krirangan are on the list of possible venues and final game locations. In the summer of 2013, the renovation and the reduction in audience capacity were decided.

At the start of the Indian Super League 2014 in October of that year, the stadium presented itself in a renovated condition. In order to increase the comfort for the visitors, the standing areas were equipped with more than 35,000 plastic seats, making the Yuba Bharati Krirangan a pure seating stadium. Overall, the capacity was reduced to 68,000 spectators for reasons of comfort and safety. The visitors have more space in their seats and the lowering is intended to reduce the rush in the aisles, toilets and the food and drink stands during breaks. Furthermore, the sanitary area with the toilets and 20 washrooms were renovated. The redesigned changing rooms for the players were equipped with a whirlpool and cold water bath . In addition, 24 company boxes with space for 120 people, divided in two with 60 seats each, were set up. There are 140 food and drink stands available to fans in the stadium. On match days, there are transport options to the nearest train or underground station. Since 2015, the stadium has had a playing surface made of natural grass again .

Another 17 million euros will be invested in the stadium for the 2017 U-17 World Cup . The work is scheduled to start in September 2015 and last for a year. Among other things, boxes for 400 people are to be built and a video surveillance system with over 1,000 cameras installed and additional emergency exits created. After the renovations, the stadium should again offer around 80,000 seats.
