Boro Match ( Bengali বড় ম্যাচ baṛa myāc , dt. Big match ) is the name of the derby between the football clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the Indian city of Calcutta . It is one of the most traditional rivalries in Asian football.

In cultural terms, the Derby is similar to the Old Firm , the clash between Celtic Glasgow and Glasgow Rangers . Here as there, the rivalry is not only characterized by sporting aspects, but also a “duel between the locals and immigrants”, whereby in both cases they also have different religious affiliations.

history

Mohun Bagan, also known as Mariners , was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest clubs in Asia. It is traditionally mainly supported by the Indians in the state of West Bengal , but has fans in all parts of the country and is considered a Hindu association in the multi-ethnic state of India . His rival East Bengal, the Red & Gold Brigade , founded in 1920, originally represented the eastern part of Bengal and is traditionally supported by the numerous immigrants from Bangladesh . Bangladesh means “land of Bengal ” in the local language and around 90 percent of Bangladeshis are Muslims . This makes the at least original explosiveness of this derby clear.

Derby balance sheet

The intense rivalry began in 1925 when East Bengal was able to prevail 1-0 in a championship game of the regional IFA League. So far there have been 301 derbies, of which East Bengal won 112. Mohun Bagan was able to prevail 85 times and 104 games ended in a draw. The goal difference speaks with 273: 227 also in favor of East Bengal. (As of June 25, 2012)
