action

The wallflower Lily works as a waitress in a fast food restaurant and her highlight of the day is when Jarrod from the computer game shop across the street enters the store at noon. He invites her good-looking colleague to a costume party with the theme "Disguise yourself as your favorite animal" and Lily uses the invitation to go to Jarrod's party disguised as a shark. The party serves to let the party guests compete against each other in a deathmatch of a beating game, whereby the winner then has to compete against Jarrod, who is so far undefeated. Lily wins the deathmatch, but then loses to Jarrod because she keeps looking at him. The two then get closer and have sex. Jarrod transfers Lily on the next date, but apologizes to her that evening and explains to her that he was depressed. He had to go back to his hometown to get revenge on his tormentor from school. Lily's brother drives them to Jarrod's hometown, where Lily meets Jarrod's family, who are as weird as Jarrod himself. Jarrod tries all the time to get his father's attention, when it turns out that Jarrod's late brother Gordon was the hero of the family.

Jarrod learns from a friend that his former tormentor Eric will return from Samoa the following day . Jarrod then sends Eric an invitation to a fight in which he wants to avenge the shame of school days. It has since been found that Jarrod has a nine-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and that Jarrod's brother killed himself. Shortly thereafter, Jarrod breaks up with Lily, whereupon Lily wants to leave the place, which she does not succeed. So she accompanies Jarrod's sister and her husband to a party where she gets drunk. The next morning, Jarrod accuses her of worrying about her. On the same day, the fight against Eric takes place, and it turns out that he is now in a wheelchair. Still, Jarrod wants to fight him, but loses the fight. Depressed by his defeat, Jarrod withdraws. However, Lily finds him and tells him that she will leave the place by bus the next day. The following day, Jarrod waits for Lily at the bus stop and gives her lilies, her favorite flowers. Then both get on the bus and drive back together.

Reviews

“Insanely unromantic but heartbreaking story full of absurd situations. Conclusion: a heart for nerds! You have to love the two. "

"[..] those who are not able to recognize their identity, who cannot deal with real feelings and passions. Taika Waititi from New Zealand felt this topic in 'Eagle vs. Shark ', a tricky love story between two modern city singles. But he does this with wonderfully refreshing irony, which repeatedly provokes a liberating laugh. "
