action

The young person Ricky Baker, who has committed several offenses, is housed by the social worker Paula with a foster family on a farm. Ricky, who grew up without his father and was left alone by his mother, reluctantly accepts his new foster mother Bella and her grumpy husband Hec. Bella gave him a dog for his 13th birthday, which he named Tupac after his role model , and which helped him to cope better with the new situation.

When Bella suddenly dies one day, the child welfare department wants to bring Ricky back to a nursing home. Ricky, who has meanwhile also become fond of Hec, then decides to run away and fakes his suicide by making a doll and setting it on fire in a hut. Together with Tupac he goes to the New Zealand bush, where he turns out to be completely unable to survive alone. Shortly afterwards, Hec finds Ricky and wants to bring him back. However, during an argument, he breaks his ankle, forcing the two to stay in the bush for a long time. In the meantime, the authorities have found the burnt down hut and have come to the conclusion that the grieving unstable foster father must have kidnapped the boy.

After Hec can walk again, he and Ricky come to a hiker's hut, where they meet three hunters. Ricky recognizes on a wanted poster in the hut that he and Hec are wanted. A misunderstanding arises during a conversation and the hunters believe that Ricky was abused by Hec. The two threaten the trio of hunters with their rifles and are able to escape. Hec confesses to Ricky that he has been in prison for manslaughter and that he is illiterate. Ricky doesn't want to go back to a care facility either, and so they both decide to go into hiding in the bush. On a mountain, Hec complies with Bella's request and scatters her ashes, which Ricky had packed before he ran away, into a stream.

The authorities have meanwhile launched a national manhunt for the two fugitives. When Hec and Ricky find a diabetic park ranger, Ricky rushes to the next settlement. There he meets the Māori girl Kahu, with whose help the ranger can be saved. Nevertheless, Ricky and Hec manage to escape the authorities. Months later, the two of them are still living undetected in the bush until they meet the crazy Sam, who also feels he is being persecuted by the government and in whose hut they are accommodated. Sam manipulates Ricky's mobile phone out of willingness to help, whereby it can be located by the police, and so it finally comes to the final chase, at the end of which Hec is arrested and Ricky is housed with Kahu's family. After Hec's release from prison, Ricky visits him and they both go in search of the Huia bird, believed to be extinct , which they saw during their adventure.

background

Director and screenwriter Taika Waititi has been working on a film adaptation of Barry Crump's novel Wild Pork and Watercress since 2005 and has written several scripts. Contrary to the original book, which is much more serious, additional characters were added in the final version for the film to loosen up the plot.

The shooting lasted five weeks and took place in the mountains of the Waitakere Ranges and the Volcanic Plateau on New Zealand's North Island . Almost all of the scenes were filmed with just one camera.

reception

The film was received extremely positively on Rotten Tomatoes , where 96 percent of 193 reviews were positive. At Metacritic , the rating is 81% based on 30 reviews.

For Tobias Mayer von Filmstarts , Where the Wild People Hunt is a "funny, wild and warm-hearted story of loss and escape [...] that bears the very personal stamp of director Taika Waititi."

Empire's Dan Jolin says the film is a little bit Up , Moonrise Kingdom and Midnight Run , and leaves the viewer “with a glow that will put Wilderpeople on their annual top list” because “some scenes are insisted on getting something in the eye to have got ”, while in others [with laughter] one“ honks like a goose on laughing gas ”.

synchronization
