Charles Atlas (artist)

Charles Atlas (* 1949 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American film director, performance and video artist . He mainly makes dance films .

life and work

An early work by Charles Atlas is the film portrait “Mayonnaise” (1973). From 1974 he worked with Merce Cunningham . The film “Blue Studio: Five Segments” (1975–1976) resulted from this cooperation. Charles Atlas also worked with Yvonne Rainer , Marina Abramović (“Delusional”, 1994 and “The Hanged One”, 1997, a multimedia installation that was shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art ), Douglas Dunn , John Kelly, Leigh Bowery , Antony Hegarty (Turning), Fennesz , New Humans (Mika Tajima & Howie Chen), Karole Armitage and Bill Irwin .

“Hail of the New Puritan” (1986) was shown in 1987 at documenta 8 in Kassel.

“Atlas represents a day in the life of a dancer. The hero of the play is the famous 23 year old“ rock star ”of the ballet Michael Clark . The camera follows him for an imaginary day and captures the atmosphere of the young London of the 80s - its fashion, music, nightlife. The film begins with a dream sequence and follows Clark from waking up to returning home at dawn the following day. At the center of the work are ten dance scenes, staged as a rehearsal, as a photo session, as a performance and as nightclub scenes. "

Charles Atlas' works have been exhibited internationally. Mention should be made of the Whitney Biennial , the Jerusalem Film Festival , the Center Georges Pompidou , Paris, the Museum of Modern Art , New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York, Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston , the World Wide Video Festival, The Hague, the Stedelijk Museum , Amsterdam, the Tate Modern in London and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo .

Atlas has received the John Cage Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship , three Bessie Awards, the National Endowment for the Arts, and many other awards.
