William Mills "Bill" Irwin (born Gil Millrer Jr. April 11, 1950 in Santa Monica , California ) is an American actor .

Life

Bill Irwin is the oldest of three children. He studied at Oberlin College in Ohio and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Clown College in Florida . In 1980 he began his film career with an appearance in Popeye - The Sailor with the Hard Blow after he had already worked as a clown and stage actor. Three years later he wrote his first and last screenplay: The Regard of Flight , a television movie.

From 1977 to 1982 he was married to Kimi Okada. He has been in a relationship with Martha Roth since 1990; they have a child together.

Awards

Irwin was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1984. In 1989 he and Kimi Okada received a Tony Award for best choreography. As best actor in the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? he was awarded the Tony Award again in 2005. In 2008, Irwin was nominated for an award from the Chicago Film Critics Association for Best Supporting Actor in Rachel's Wedding .
