Johannes Wanke (born March 14, 1923 in Vienna ; † April 25, 2005 in Neumarkt an der Raab ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist . His work is characterized above all by brightly colored paintings as well as expressionist woodcuts .

During his school days he designed his first exhibition in the Währing school of the Marienbrüder. He studied from 1940 to 1949 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and graduated with honors. In 1950 he received the State Prize of the Art Academy.

Wanke then worked as a freelancer. Initially, the artist devoted himself primarily to the woodcut. He turned musical impressions from classical composers, but also from Arnold Schönberg, into pictures. In doing so, he created a cycle of over 1000 sheets.

He then shifted his artistic focus to watercolors and, in his later creative period, to oil painting . His painting is characterized by the power of color in the pictures.

Since 1968 Wanke taught and gave summer courses in Neumarkt. In 1981 he made this place in southern Burgenland his home. In 1977 he was appointed professor.

Wanke's pictures were shown in numerous exhibitions around the world, including the Sao Paulo Biennale and the Florence Biennale of Graphics.

Wanke was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1961 , the Theodor Körner Prize in 1972 and the Great Decoration of Honor of the Province of Burgenland in 1993.

His works can be found in the well-known museums and galleries in Austria, in the Diocesan Museum in Zagreb, but also in various private collections.
