Anton Josef Ritter von Kenner (born September 11, 1871 in Brunn am Gebirge , Lower Austria , † May 1, 1951 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and professor at the Vienna School of Applied Arts .

Anton von Kenner was born on September 11, 1871 in Brunn am Gebirge as the son of the chief financial officer Anton von Kenner and his wife Henriette. His grandfather was the tax officer and draftsman Joseph Kenner , his uncle the archaeologist Friedrich von Kenner . He grew up with two older and one younger brother in Josefstadt, Vienna, and from 1881 to 1891 attended the humanistic grammar school in Seitenstetten Abbey / Lower Austria. In 1909 von Kenner married his student Berta Tragau, and their daughter Hedwig Kenner was born the following year .

academic career

From 1891, Anton von Kenner studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Ludwig von Minnigerode , Karl Hrachowina and Andreas Groll . From 1894 to 1896 he taught there as an assistant to Adolf Ginzel. In 1897 he belonged to Franz von Matsch's senior class .

1896-1906 he was professor of stylistics . From 1899, von Kenner headed the department for candidate teachers on the Laurenzerberg. During this activity he was appointed professor in 1904. From 1906 to 1934 he was first head of anatomical drawing and modeling, and later in various other areas. Among his most prominent students in the early years were Anton Kolig and Oskar Kokoschka , who from 1904 to 1906 attended Kenner's department for freehand drawing candidates at secondary schools. In the academic year 1912/13 Kokoschka was assistant to Kenners in the course for general life drawing , the so-called "evening act". In 1934 von Kenner retired, but continued teaching until 1937. In 1941, due to the war, he was again head of a department at the School of Applied Arts and worked until he was replaced by Carl Unger in 1950 . He was buried at the Gersthofer cemetery .

Artistic work

Von Kenner was one of the founding members of the Austrian Werkbund . From 1929 he was a member of the cooperative of visual artists Vienna in the Künstlerhaus and took part in the exhibitions. In addition to his teaching activities, von Kenner dealt with many forms of visual arts, he created oil paintings, watercolors, murals and graphics. This includes landscapes, portraits, still lifes and numerous depictions of subjects from antiquity. His graphic work includes bookplates , color lithographs and pen drawings, but he also illustrated books and magazines. From 1921 he drew hundreds of political cartoons for the magazines Der Faun and Die Muskete . The numerous picture books he designed for children and adults were not published. In addition, von Kenner made designs for ceramics, tapestries and other decorative room fittings throughout his entire artistic activity, as well as enamel work and pieces of jewelry in recent decades.

Numerous novels, stories, legends, dramas and poems written between 1898 and 1937 remained unpublished, some of which he had revised several times.

In 1974, his daughter donated 28 pictures by Kenners to the market town of Brunn am Gebirge, on condition that they not be sold and that they be presented to the public.
