Christian Ludwig Martin (born June 2, 1890 in Lubau, Bohemia , † June 3, 1967 in Vienna ) was an Austrian etcher , book illustrator, wood cutter and figure and landscape painter.

Life

From 1909 Christian Ludwig Martin studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Alois Delug , Rudolf Jettmar and Ferdinand Schmutzer . He also studied in Paris and Italy. In 1917 he received the Rome Prize and in 1918 the Bear Prize of the Berlin Academy . He became a member of the Vienna Secession in 1919 and was its president from 1922 to 1926 and 1931 to 1935. In 1921 he became professor of graphics at the Vienna Women's Academy . He held the same position from 1925 to 1965 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. From 1936 he headed the master school for graphics there. As rector, he managed the academy for years. In recognition of special services to the erection of the Emperor Franz Joseph Monument in Vienna, he was named a founder in 1937.

He created significant works in book illustration and bookplate . His cycles “Großstadt”, “Prater”, “Vom Großer Dieben”, “Nights” and sheets with figural themes on religion and current affairs are well known.

Less known are his watercolors, which he created with great pleasure outdoors on site in Dürnstein and in the Waldviertel.

Martin died in 1967 and was buried in a grave of honor in the Neustift cemetery .

Awards

  • In 1958 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art by the Federal President.
