The Morbach Energy Landscape is an energy park on a former military site north of Morbach in Rhineland-Palatinate , in which wind energy , solar energy and biomass are used to generate electrical energy and, in some cases, thermal energy .

history

Between 1955 and 1995, the ammunition depot Niedersachsen was the largest ammunition depot of the US Air Force in Europe with an area of ​​145 hectares and a stored ammunition amount of about 35,000 tons . After the military use ended, the conversion area was initially intended as a model project for tourist use. However, since no investor could be found for this, the location was redesigned as an energy park in 2001.

Plant parts

Wind farm

The wind farm originally had a total nominal output of 28  MW . It consisted of fourteen wind turbines of the type Vestas V80-2MW with 100 m hub height, 80 m rotor diameter and 2 MW per turbine. Between 40 and 45 GWh of energy were produced each year  , which corresponds to an average output of 5.1 MW and the consumption of around 13,000 average households. The plants were operated by the Juwi company , one plant was a community wind power plant . In 2008, the construction of a fifteenth Fuhrländer FL 2500 system with a nominal output of 2.5 MW on a 160 m high lattice mast was planned, but was not built due to disagreements between the manufacturer and the operator.

As of summer 2018, the 14 existing systems were dismantled and replaced by repowering with seven new Enercon E-141 EP4 systems with a total nominal output of 29.4 MW and a hub height of 159 m. The expected annual yield is 66.7 million kilowatt hours. In contrast to the dismantled wind farm, all seven turbines are operated as two community wind farms. The project was largely initiated by the company Wust - Wind & Sonne from Markt Erlbach . Wiwi Consult from Mainz was commissioned with the implementation . The handover to the operator took place after completion in April 2020. The responsible network operator for the network connection at medium voltage level is Westnetz .

Solar park

In the Wattpeak model, the photovoltaic system has a calculated peak power of 4.5 MW and covers a module area of ​​45,000 m². The system went into operation in 2002 with an initial nominal output of around 500 kW and was expanded in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2018.

Biogas plant

The biogas plant has a nominal electrical output of 500 kW and a thermal output of 700 kW. The waste heat is used entirely to dry wood in a wood pellet production facility built in 2007 . Around 3.8 GWh of electrical and 5 GWh of thermal energy are produced each year. The biogas for operating the biogas plant is obtained from around 5,000 tons of liquid manure and 10,000 tons of silage from maize, grass and grain.

Renewable gas plant

In March 2011, a methanation plant was also in operation in the Morbach energy landscape for a few weeks , in which it was tested under real conditions how excess electrical energy can be stored as methane gas with high levels of wind and solar power being fed in. In this test facility, which was built jointly by EtoGas and ZSW and has an electrical output of 25 kW, water is first broken down into its components hydrogen and oxygen with the help of electrolysis . Then the hydrogen is converted into methane with carbon dioxide , which comes from a biogas plant or the air, and can be fed into the existing natural gas network.

Others

There is also space for a commercial area within the Morbach energy park . A wood pellet plant has been producing this CO 2 -neutral fuel since 2007 . The necessary drying heat comes from the biogas plant (see above); the raw materials are sawmill residues from regional sawmills. A log house company also produces impressive houses here from the renewable raw material wood from sustainable cultivation. The communal forest enterprise is also located here. The aim is to move to the establishment of such companies that use, for example, the waste heat generated by biomass plants and, in return, generate energetically usable organic waste. The Morbach energy landscape is also integrated into tourism in the region. In addition to regular tours and a presentation of renewable energies , an information center has also been available to visitors since 2012.
