The former ammunition depot Niedersachsen near Morbach in the Hunsrück comprised an area of ​​142 ha and was at times the largest depot of the US Air Force in Europe .

history

At the beginning of the 1950s, the site was selected for military use by the then occupying power of France . It was then expanded by the US Army in 1955 after the land that belonged to the former municipalities of Lessath and Rapperath was expropriated .

At the beginning of the 1960s, the depot was handed over to the US Air Force and expanded until 1968. The name for the facility was now Kleinesath Ammunition Storage Area . In 1972 the depot was subordinated to the Hahn Air Base and on January 1, 1975 renamed the Morbach Ammunition Storage Area .

After Hahn Air Base was closed in 1993, the staff at the depot grew to over 300 soldiers, as three more depots were closed and the goods stored there were brought to the local depot.

This depot was also emptied from September 1994 to August 1995. The official closure took place on June 2, 1995.

The area was criss-crossed with roads with a total length of almost 20 kilometers. The buildings and bunkers comprised around 21 hectares, splinter barriers and storage areas in the area of ​​the former bomb storage area around 65 hectares. Around 50 hectares of the site were forested. The ammunition depot was protected by a 1 m deep concrete wall set into the ground, as well as a 3 m high metal fence, which was secured by an S-wire crown . The fence was fully lit at night. There were observation bunkers at regular intervals.

Todays use

After partial dismantling, the site has been integrated into the Morbach energy landscape since 2002, in which electricity is generated from renewable energies by fourteen wind turbines , a solar field and a biogas plant .
