Peter Dotrel was born on December 9, 1942, the son of Rudolf Dotrel (himself a part of landscape and genre painter) and his wife Julia Dotrel (née Prachar). From 1960 to 1967 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Franz Elsner and Herbert Boeckl . The works of that time, especially still lifes and portraits , are based on the gestural painting style and the light dramaturgy of Franz Elsner. In the late 1960s Dotrel was inspired by the geometric color surface painting created after 1945 by his teacher Herbert Boeckl. Increasingly abstract compositions emerge in dealing with analytical cubism .

Around 1970 there was a clear change in style, Dotrel took back the brushstroke and created atmospheric color spaces that set the stage for mystical motifs, stereometric shapes or figures influenced by surrealism . The pictures of that time are like windows into the subconscious, into dream worlds and foreign dimensions.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the artist's brushstroke became clearly visible again, Dotrel's gestural painting approach approached Informel . The color palette is reduced to a red-white-black scheme. Figures or physical forms, mostly in smoky black, are now the main motif. They serve the artist to formulate innermost thoughts and feelings artistically and to deal with the depths of human existence.

Around the year 2000, taking care of his mother and his own illnesses increasingly deprived Peter Dotrel of his artistic creativity. He died after a long suffering on September 2nd, 2013 and was buried at Neustift am Walde cemetery (Vienna- Währing ).

Peter Dotrel withdrew from the art world throughout his life. His impressive work was only made known to a wider public after his death.
