Life

Anton Baumann was the son of a wine grower in the Banat . As a young man he took up the profession of wine merchant, came on one of his trips to the house of the wealthy winemaker Karl Ruhrhofer in Währing (Ruhrhofergasse) and later married his daughter Josefa. From 1885 he was a member of the community committee of the Vienna suburb of Währing. In 1890 he became a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and in 1894, after the suburbs were incorporated, he was district chairman of Währing as the successor to Jakob Gerlach.

During his 25-year term in office, he built the Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater in 1898 , in 1906 the new Währinger grammar school in Klostergasse, in 1910 the extension of the Türkenschanzpark and, as a major contribution, the expansion of the sewerage system in Währing.

He survived an assassination attempt when an assistant gravedigger who had been dismissed for constant drunkenness fired several shots at him and a random companion. The companion died on the scene.

For his services he was appointed to the Imperial Council. Marble tablets in the Währinger Amtshaus and in the Volksoper and the Anton-Baumann-Park on the Währinger Gürtel, in which the water tower of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Wasserleitung stands, are named after him.

His grave is in the Neustift cemetery .
