Lívia Dobay

Lívia Dobay , later Lívia Dobay-Bauer (born May 15, 1912 in Budapest , † July 16, 2002 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ) at the Hungarian State Opera.

Life

Her mother recognized her musical talent at a very early age and had her piano lessons at the age of three. A year later, at the age of four, she gave her first piano concerto in the Redoutensaal in Budapest. In 1932, immediately after graduating from the Franz Liszt Music Academy , where she had studied with Jenő Hubay and Béla Szabados , she received an engagement at the Royal Hungarian State Opera in Budapest as a lyric soprano.

She made her debut in Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci as Nedda in 1933 . In 1956 she fled Budapest on the occasion of the Hungarian uprising . Most of their sound recordings in Hungary were then destroyed on the orders of the government.

Her star roles were Mimi in La Bohème and the title role in Madama Butterfly . Over the years she has worked with Franz Lehár , Issay Dobrowen , Helge Rosvaenge , Alessandro Ziliani and Ferenc Fricsay , among others . She sang numerous operas and operettas on Hungarian radio .

Dobay was buried in the urn grove U6-51 at the Neustifter Friedhof in Vienna.
