Heinrich Kraus (theater scholar)
Heinrich Kraus (born August 21, 1923 in Vienna ; † May 24, 2018 there ) was an Austrian theater scholar and theater director . From 1964 to 1971 he was administrative director and from 1971 vice director of the Vienna Burgtheater , from 1984 he was director of the theater in der Josefstadt in 1987 , from 1990 he was president of the International Nestroy Society .
Life
Heinrich Kraus was born as the son of Robert Kraus, who was head of the cultural office of the city of Vienna from 1945 to 1956 . His grandfather Alois Kraus was director of the Schönbrunn zoo from 1879 to 1919 . After graduating from high school in 1941, Heinrich Kraus was drafted into the Wehrmacht . After the end of the Second World War he began to study theater studies at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1948 .
From 1945 he was entrusted with artistic and organizational tasks as an employee in the management of the Vienna Burgtheater. In 1949 Helene Thimig-Reinhardt brought him to the Max Reinhardt Seminar as deputy head , and in 1951 he became Ernst Haeusserman's assistant in the cultural department of the United States Embassy in Vienna . From 1957 to 1959 he was director of the Philharmonia Hungarica , then chief dispatcher of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein . In 1961 Haeusserman brought him back to the Burgtheater, where Kraus was administrative director from 1964 to 1971 and from 1971 deputy director. In 1977 he moved to the Theater in der Josefstadt, where, after Haeusserman's death, from 1984 to 1987 he took on the agendas of the managing director and later that of the managing partner, and from 2005 he was chairman of the advisory board for the theater in the Josefstadt private foundation .
From 1969 to 1994 he had a teaching position at the Theater Studies Institute at the University of Vienna, and from 1983 to 1994 he taught theater law and practice theater at the Reinhardt Seminar. From 1990 he was President of the International Nestroy Society and the Raimund Society .
From 1963 Kraus was married to the opera singer Margareta Sjöstedt (1923–2012). He died in May 2018 at the age of 94.
