Ottokar Uhl
Ottokar Uhl (born March 2, 1931 in Wolfsberg in Carinthia ; † November 3, 2011 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and university professor.
Life
Ottokar Uhl moved to Vienna in 1940 and graduated from the Federal Trade School in Mödling in the building construction department in 1949 . In 1950 he studied briefly at the Technical University of Vienna , then in Lois Welzenbacher's master class at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . He completed his diploma in 1953 with Lois Welzenbacher with a thesis on the Basel Cultural Center. In 1957 he took part in the International Summer Academy Salzburg with Konrad Wachsmann , subject: "Investigation of the influence on the industrialization of building: Salzburghalle - development of a knot system".
In 1973 he succeeded Egon Eiermann as professor for building planning and design at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Karlsruhe Fridericiana .
His diverse projects focus on sacred buildings after the Second Vatican Council (Demontable Church Siemensstrasse, Vienna, 1960–64; Church and Pastoral Care Center Taegu, South Korea; 1964–66; Montagekirche Kundratstrasse , Vienna, 1966–67; Catholic Community Center St. Judas Thaddäus, Karlsruhe-Neureut, 1980–89) and in participatory housing (residential complex “Wohnen morgen”, Hollabrunn, 1971–76; Festgasse, Vienna 16, 1973–83; residential building “Wohnen mit Kindern”, Vienna, 1985–90; residential home BROT, Vienna, 1985-90). Its architecture is particularly concerned with participation and interdisciplinary, process-oriented planning.
After his retirement in 1994, he was visiting professor for liturgical science at the University of Vienna in 1995 .
Uhl was buried at the Kalksburger Friedhof in Vienna.

- 1991: Austrian builder award for the BROT community residence in Vienna
- 1991: Hugo Häring Prize (BDA) for the St. Judas Thaddäus community center
- 1991: Gold Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna
- 1993: Austrian Eco Prize for Architecture
- 1996: Ludwig Wittgenstein Prize
- 2001: Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Vienna
- 2007: Honorary doctorate from the Vienna University of Technology
