The residential complex living with children in Vienna - Floridsdorf was designed and built between 1980 and 1984 with the architect Ottokar Uhl . The residential complex is an internationally recognized residential building for child-friendly communal rooms and apartments. The builders saw themselves as pioneers in co-determination in residential building planning , but the project was also a model project for self-administration of the residents.

initial situation

Students with children in the vicinity of the Catholic university community in Vienna looked for options for family-friendly living in urban areas in joint meetings. When it became possible to buy a property, the Living with Children Association was founded . With the architecture office Ottokar Uhl and the local employees Franz Kuzmich, Erich Müller and Martin Wurnig, the planning and construction of a child-friendly residential building was carried out.

Construction planning

Two pieces of land, already in the previous use as a coal merchant, connected across the corner on the courtyard side, were developed with two buildings, Jeneweingasse 32 (6 apartments) and Wiener Gasse 6 (10 apartments).

In compliance with the provisions of the housing subsidy , a maximum of common rooms was built and the legal budget was undercut.

The design of the courtyard garden was worked out with the landscape architect János Koppándy, who provided the garden with a toboggan hill.

Self-management

The decision-making mode developed during the planning and construction was continued in the residential phase with monthly meetings, with one resident representing the community to the outside world. In 1991, the apartments were handed over to the owner-occupied property, whereby both houses form an apartment owners' association.

From 1984 to 2014 there was an open kindergarten in Jeneweingasse , which was also used by children from the district .
