Michael Powolny

Michael Powolny (born September 18, 1871 in Judenburg , Austria-Hungary ; † January 4, 1954 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ceramic designer and sculptor .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a potter, Powolny attended the technical college for the clay industry in Znojmo from 1891 to 1894 , and then from 1894 to 1901 the Vienna School of Applied Arts . In 1906 he founded together with Bertold Löffler the Viennese ceramics , their distribution after about a year of the Wiener Werkstätte was acquired. In 1913 Wiener Keramik merged with Gmundner Keramik (Vereinigte Wiener and Gmundner Keramik and Gmundner Tonwarenfabrik Schleiss Gesellschaft mbH). Michael Powolny worked from 1909 to 1936 as a teacher at the arts and crafts school. His works, which can be assigned to Art Deco from 1929 , have been shown at numerous international exhibitions and fetch high prices from collectors. Powolny was consulted by Josef Hoffmann in furnishing the Fledermaus Cabaret and the Stoclet Palace and in the design of several large villa buildings in Vienna. Powolny also designed the new Austrian one-shilling coin from 1952.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Powolny was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna in 1951 .

Powolny was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 13 B, Row 12, No. 7).

1965 in Vienna's 22nd district , the Powolnygasse named after him.
