Hermann Josef Ullrich

Hermann Josef Ullrich (born August 15, 1888 in Mödling near Vienna ; † October 16, 1982 in Weidling near Vienna) was an Austrian lawyer , composer , music critic and historian .

Life

Coming from a family of lawyers, Ullrich completed his law studies in Vienna, received his doctorate in 1911 and worked there as a judge until 1918. At the same time music theory studies and a. with Josef Bohuslav Foerster . 1918 to 1927 judge in Salzburg, he also studied at the Mozarteum a. a. with Bernhard Paumgartner , F. Peytrek and FF Frischenschlager. It was during this time that his friendship with Franz Ledwinka began . From 1922 he worked as a music critic for a Salzburg newspaper and from 1925 freelance for the " Neue Freie Presse ". From 1934 to 1938 he worked full-time as a critic and journalist for the same newspaper in Vienna.

From 1939 to 1946 Ullrich emigrated to Great Britain and worked there a. a. participated in the émigré magazine "Free Austria" under the pseudonym "Eusebius" and was general secretary of the Free Austrian Movement around 1942 until it was dissolved , after which he returned to Austria.

He became Vice-President of the Supreme Court in Austria (until 1958) and music critic of the daily newspaper " Neues Österreich " until it was discontinued in 1967. In the 1960s, he worked intensively on Maria Theresia Paradis , and in the 1970s he published several articles on the Circle of Friends Beethoven's.

Hermann Josef Ullrich received the Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class and the Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna in silver. He was buried in the Hietzingen cemetery . His estate is in the Austrian National Library.
