Georg Kotek (born March 4, 1889 in Vienna , † November 2, 1977 in Purkersdorf ) was an Austrian folk song researcher and collector who made a special contribution to the Lower Austrian folk song collection.

Life

Kotek studied Jus at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1907. At the Vienna Academy of Music, he studied voice training, singing and music theory, 1935, he received the honorary title "Professor".

Kotek worked full-time as a lawyer at Wiener Elektrizitätswerke, most recently as administrative director. In 1920 he was the founder of the union of company employees. In 1909 Kotek joined the Vienna People's Choir, of which he was chairman from 1924 until his death in 1977. He was co-editor of the magazine Das deutsche Volkslied and initiated from 1932 to 1938 with the Radio Verkehrs AG (RAVAG) folk songs in all regions of Austria, which were recorded for the radio. In 1959 he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna . Kotek's 7,000-volume library on folk songs is now part of the central archive of the Austrian Folk Song Works . In addition to written and audio documents, he also collected traditional musical instruments. This collection was acquired by the Austrian Folklore Museum after his death.

Political commitment

Kotek was a member of the SDAP from 1919 until the ban in 1934 , then a supporting member of the paramilitary home guard in the Austro-Fascist corporate state . After the “ Anschluss ” in 1938, he applied for admission to the NSDAP in July of the same year and stated that he had already organized events for illegal NSDAP members in Josefstadt (8th district of Vienna) during the prohibition period . However, Kotek's application was first postponed and only resumed in 1944, since he was considered a "knight of the economy" by the electricity companies. He had quickly changed from the Social Democrats to the Heimwehr and in 1935 was even honored with the title of "Professor".

Kotek remained the chief editor of Das deutsche Volkslied during the Nazi era and was promoted to head of department at the electricity works. At the end of 1944 he referred in letters to the Reichsmusikkammer to the " Aryan principle " implemented by his role model Josef Pommer in the monthly magazine since 1889.
