Reinhard Urbach
Reinhard Urbach (born November 12, 1939 in Weimar , Thuringia ) is an Austrian literary and theater scholar , dramaturge and theater director.
Life
Reinhard Urbach studied German, history, art history and theater studies at the universities in Cologne , Bonn and Vienna , where he has lived since 1964. From his professor Richard Alewyn , with whom he did his doctorate on Arthur Schnitzler's The Green Cockatoo (1975), he was referred to his son Heinrich Schnitzler in Vienna. In 1968 he published the first scientific monograph on Arthur Schnitzler in the post-war period and was thus part of the author's renaissance. From 1968 to 1975 he was an employee and deputy director of the Austrian Society for Literature . At this point in time he had already been working with Schnitzler for more than a decade, and the ongoing preoccupation with the Viennese author resulted in several editions and secondary literature that made him one of Schnitzler's key experts. From 1975 to 1979 he was literary advisor at the cultural office of the city of Vienna. In this function he founded and managed the literary quarter in the old smithy . Since 1977 he was also dramaturge at the Burgtheater , from 1979 to 1986 as chief dramaturge. The series of events Literature in March came from his initiative , and he was responsible for the program from 1979 to 1986. In 1987 he was theater commissioner for Europalia "Austria" in Brussels and was awarded the Order of the Belgian Crown for this activity. Since the 1986/87 season he was artistic director, from March 1988 to August 2002 director of the Theater der Jugend .
In addition to these activities, he taught at several universities: 1970 visiting professor for German studies, Washington University in St. Louis , 1976–2002 teaching positions at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna , 1990–2002 at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies at the same university . 1994/95 visiting professor for dramaturgy, Max Reinhardt Seminar .
In addition to his busy publishing activities on Schnitzler, he is the author of several publications on Austrian literary and theater history in the 19th and 20th centuries ( Ferdinand Raimund , Johann Nestroy and others).
In his possession there is a partial estate from Otto Soyka .
