The green cockatoo is a grotesque in one act by Arthur Schnitzler . It was created in 1898 and premiered on March 1, 1899, together with his plays Paracelsus and Die Gefäßin , at the Vienna Burgtheater . The piece addresses the indistinguishability of truth and lies, of appearance and reality.

Paris 1789: Prospère, a former theater director, runs a tavern called "The Green Cockatoo". Many unsuccessful actors, Prospère's former employees, are regulars. The pub is also frequented by aristocrats. They hope there will be the pleasant thrill of moving between real street crooks and other rabble. So the actors play criminals. They brag to each other about their acts of violence. On July 14th , the day the French Revolution broke out , the real street turmoil penetrates the scene. Reality and play mix, and it becomes more and more difficult for the aristocratic audience as well as for the performers to distinguish roles from real people and play from truth.
Arrangement as an opera
The composer Richard Mohaupt adapted Schnitzler's piece and created the one-act opera Der Grüne Kakadu from 1954–1956 , which premiered on September 16, 1958 at the Hamburg State Opera (conductor: Albert Bittner , staging: Ulrich Erfurth , choirs: Günter Hertel, setting: Helmut Koniarsky ).
