Helmut Koniarsky

Helmut Koniarsky (born October 14, 1913 in Berlin ; † November 15, 1991 in Hamburg ) was a German set designer and painter . From 1976 he was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg .

Life

Koniarsky's artistic training took place at the Higher Graphic Technical School in Berlin. From 1933 to 1935 he was a volunteer and stage designer at the Prussian state theaters under Rochus Gliese and Traugott Müller . Koniarsky went with Alfred Noller to the State Opera in Hamburg, then to the German theater in Oslo. After the war, Ida Ehre hired him as a set designer for the Hamburger Kammerspiele, among other things for the world premiere of Borchert's “ Outside front door ”. The marriage with the dancer Otti Tenzel took place in 1950. In 1955 Koniarsky received an engagement at the Württemberg State Theaters in Stuttgart. Otti Tenzel-Koniarsky was also appointed to Stuttgart as prima ballerina. From 1955 he worked as a freelance set designer on all major German theaters and from 1957 onwards, he was increasingly doing freelance artistic work in his studio in Hamburg. In 1962 Koniarsky got a teaching position and became a lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg. In 1976 the Hamburg Senate appointed him professor. One of the last sets was for the production of “ Under the Stairs ” by Charles Dyers with Will Quadflieg and Klaus Schwarzkopf, initially for Berlin, then for the German Theater in Hamburg. After that Koniarsky worked almost exclusively as a freelance artist. After suffering from cancer, in the last three years of his life he painted almost exclusively abstract colored compositions.

Award

On April 20, 1976, the Hamburg Senate appointed him professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts .
