The Brave Cassian is a one-act puppet show by Arthur Schnitzler . It premiered on November 22nd, 1904 - together with the one-act play The Green Cockatoo - in the Small Theater in Praterstrasse . The revised version with music by Oscar Straus was performed on October 30, 1909 in Leipzig. It was first published in 1909 and 1910 by S. Fischer Verlag .
background
The veil of Pierrette and The brave Cassian occupy a special position , because Schnitzler wrote both works directly for music. In contrast to The Green Cockatoo , the piece fell through with the audience when it premiered in November 1904. Schnitzler later turned the burlesque into a singspiel . In this version, for which Oskar Straus wrote the music, it was re-performed and published in 1909.
During the revision, Schnitzler intensified “the comic element with which he hyperbolically parodies the classic salon drama ; he also added new lyrics. The dramatic conflict, miniaturized in the costume of the puppet show - Cassian wins against Martin in play, in love and in a duel - shrinks to the realm of the tangible. "
Schnitzler had experimented with anti-illusionist dramaturgy in The Green Cockatoo , as well as in his puppet plays The Brave Cassian (1904) and Zum Großer Wurstel (1905).
action
The student Martin leaves his girlfriend Sophie to hang out with a dancer. His cousin, the brave Cassian , then conquers Sophie and kills Martin; but in the end he too feels drawn to the dancer.
