Karl Przibram [ ˈpʃɪbram ] (born December 21, 1878 in Vienna ; † August 10, 1973 ibid) was an Austrian physicist .

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied physics, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Vienna from 1896 and received his doctorate in 1901 at the University of Graz . After a stay abroad in London , he completed his habilitation in Vienna in 1905. From 1912 he worked at the Vienna Institute for Radium Research , in particular on radio photoluminescence , and from 1927 as an associate professor at the University of Vienna.

After Austria was annexed to National Socialist Germany, he had to retire and spent the time of World War II in Brussels . There he fought against German fascism on the Austrian Freedom Front. In 1946 he returned to the University of Vienna as a full professor and was elected a corresponding member, in 1950 a real member of the mathematics and natural sciences class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Karl Przibram rests in the Israelite section of the Vienna Central Cemetery. He was the brother of the zoologist Hans Leo Przibram , who died in 1944 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp .
