Hugo Pepper

Hugo Pepper (born February 4, 1920 in Vienna ; † September 1, 2011 there ) was an Austrian resistance fighter , popular educator and publicist .

Life

Hugo Pepper grew up in the district of Hernals in Vienna . His father, a founding member of the Communist Party of Austria , shaped him politically left . During the Austro-fascist “corporate state” , Pepper was in a group of the Austrian Young People .

In 1938, Pepper was reported by the National Socialists on suspicion of belonging to an illegal youth organization, as well as high treason and secret grouping. However, the following proceedings were discontinued in 1940. Pepper now had to do military service with the Artillery Regiment 109 and came to Russia, among other places. After returning from there due to illness, he joined the military resistance movement in the Wehrmacht . With like-minded soldiers, the allied troops should be able to cross the Enns . However, the group was denounced and broken up after fighting with the Waffen SS .

After the Second World War , Pepper was briefly captured. In October 1945 he returned to Vienna, where he began to study political science and worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Asset Protection and Economic Planning . He also directed the student cabaret "Der Rote Hund". From 1951 to 1962 Pepper worked in the education department of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions . He then worked for Europaverlag from 1962 until his retirement in 1982 , first as an editor and later as chief editor. In this function he obtained the publication of the complete works of Otto Bauer . Furthermore, from 1992 to 1995 Pepper was chairman of the Association of Social Democratic Freedom Fighters and from 1989 until his death on the board of the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW).

As author and co-author, Pepper has published a variety of books, authored more than 1,300 articles, glosses, and essays, and around 1,700 book reviews.

Pepper died on September 1, 2011 at the age of 91.

Honors

Pepper stood up all his life as a contemporary witness, author and lecturer against fascism . In 1973 he was awarded the professional title of Professor for his commitment . Five years later, in 1978, he received the Decoration of Honor for Services to the Liberation of Austria . In 1979 he received the Otto Bauer plaque , in 1980 the Victor Adler State Prize and in 1985 the City of Vienna Prize for Popular Education . In 2004 he was awarded the gold medal of the federal capital Vienna . In November 2010, the film Hugo Pepper - Thinking at Your Own Risk (directed by Markus Vorzellner ) was premiered in Vienna. On July 19, 2011, State Secretary Josef Ostermayer awarded him the Gold Medal of Merit of the Republic of Austria .
