Séamus Kirk

Séamus Kirk (born April 26, 1945 in Drumkeith , County Louth ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

Kirk, who is a farmer by profession , was first elected a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) in 1982 and has since represented the constituency of Louth after six re-elections .

After Fianna Fáil won the 1987 general election, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey on March 10, 1987 and held this post of "junior minister" until the end of Haughey's term on February 11, 1992. During this time, horticulture also fell into his area of ​​responsibility.

Between December 10, 1997 and 2002, he chaired the House of Commons Committee on European Affairs.

From October 13, 2009 to March 9, 2011, he was the successor to John O'Donoghue, who resigned because of controversial expense reports, President ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the House of Commons.
