In 1994, the car manufacturer Renault first presented a prototype of a navigation system to the press in a Renault Safrane . Renault has been selling its factory-installed navigation systems under the Carminat brand since 1995 ; these are manufactured by different companies. All of these systems are only available ex works as original equipment, retrofitting is not possible. The following systems are or were available:

Carminate 5000

Monochrome navigation system with arrow display and voice announcement

  • Remarks:
    • The name is not entirely clear, because in the Laguna 3 this system was offered under the heading Navigation and Communication with the name Navigation system Carminat 2 Bluetooth with Germany CD. In the operating instructions it is called Carminat Bluetooth CD or Carminat Bluetooth CD Auditorium (without the 2 in the name, but with the addition CD).
    • This system is only compatible with the Renault Audio Connection Box if the AUX / CD changer outputs are enabled by software, which seems to be problematic (some workshops manage it, others don't).

Carminate 3

Navigation system with 2D and 3D map display

  • Support will be discontinued in 2014, there are no further updates from Renault SAS
  • Operation: Via multimedia control button in the center console or via voice recognition.
  • Vehicles: There are two sub-versions of this navigation system: ITD1 is used in the following models: Scenic (phase 2), Laguna 2 (phase 2), Vel Satis (phase 2), Espace (phase 2); the ITD2 is used in the Koleos , Laguna 3, Megane 3, Scenic 3
  • Remarks:
    • This system is also sold in a similar form as the Nissan Birdview
    • In the Laguna 3 this system is offered under the name Carminat DVD Navigation and Communication or Carminat Bluetooth DVD Nav-Com System .
    • In the Koleos off-road vehicle , the system is supplemented by additional screen displays showing the vehicle's inclination angle and the direction of travel (for off-road driving).
    • In the Scenic 3, the image from the reversing camera is also displayed on the Carminat 3 screen.
    • This system is not compatible with the Renault Audio Connection Box. Port occupied by DVD navigation.

Carminat TomTom

Inexpensive navigation system based on TomTom devices; the screen is integrated into the dashboard and the voice output is via the vehicle speakers. In contrast to the portable TomTom devices, input is not made via a touchscreen, but via a remote control or controls on the dashboard. Like the other Carminat systems, the Carminat TomTom is also connected to a gyroscope and to the ABS wheel sensors in order to be able to determine the position even if the GPS signal is not available.

Carminat TomTom LIVE 2.0

Like the Carminat TomTom, the LIVE version is also an inexpensive navigation system based on TomTom LIVE devices; the screen is integrated into the dashboard and the voice output is via the vehicle speakers. In contrast to the portable TomTom devices, input is not made via a touchscreen, but via a remote control or controls on the dashboard. Like the Carminat TomTom, the Carminat TomTom LIVE is also connected to a gyroscope and to the ABS wheel sensors in order to be able to determine the position even if the GPS signal is not available. Compared to the Carminat TomTom, the Carminat TomTom LIVE offers the TomTom LIVE services, which are received via a GSM module in the navigation system. The services are chargeable after a trial period has expired.

In order to reduce the costs for the map CDs / DVDs, the car manufacturers BMW , Mercedes-Benz , Renault and VW agreed in summer 2008 to develop a common data format for the map data. The first products in this format were planned for 2010. However, with the introduction of standard navigation systems such as TomTom devices, this planning has become obsolete.

General

In addition to the actual control unit (e.g. in DIN format for the radio slot), all of these systems require additional vehicle components, e.g. B. the radio / temperature / time central display or the GPS antenna on the vehicle roof; they can therefore not be easily used in other vehicles. Since the data carriers often also contain firmware updates, the use of data CDs / DVDs other than the original is also not easily possible.
