The Prince Jidōsha Kōgyō KK ( Japanese プ リ ン ス 自動 車 工業 株式会社 , Purinsu jidōsha kōgyō kabushiki kaisha , English Prince Motor Company ) was a Japanese automobile manufacturer that built luxury cars and commercial vehicles from 1947 until the takeover by Nissan in August 1966.

history

After the Second World War, the aircraft manufacturer Tachikawa Hikōki reoriented itself to the automotive industry. A borrowed factory in Chofu , Kitatama-gun , Tokyo Prefecture was used . Since gasoline was rationed at the time, the focus was on battery-powered electric vehicles. In 1946 the first two truck prototypes of the type EOT-46 were produced, which were based on an Ōta model. The fully self-developed EOT-47 prototype followed in 1947. The E4S-47 passenger car followed in May and was named Tama after the place of manufacture . In June, the independent company Tōkyō Denki Jidōsha ( 東京 電 気 自動 車 , English Tokyo Electric Motorcar Co. , German "Electric vehicles Tokyo") was founded.

In 1948 the Tama Junior (E4S-48) and Tama Senior (EMS-48) followed as successor models to the Tama (E4S-47) and in 1949 the Tama Junior 4 Door (E4S-49).

In 1949 the company name was changed to Tama Denki Jidōsha ( た ま 電 気 自動 車 , dt. "Electric vehicles Tama"). After Prince Akihito was formally appointed heir to the throne on November 10, 1952, the name was changed to Prince Jidōsha Kōgyō in the same month. In 1954 there was a merger with the Fuji Seimitsu Kōgyō ( 富士 精密 d, German "Fuji Precision Machinery ", English Fuji Precision Industries ), the name being taken over by the latter. In 1961 it was renamed to Prince Jidōsha Kōgyō.

Prince successfully built luxury automobiles. The best-known model series were the Skyline and the Gloria , which were added to their model range after the takeover by Nissan. The Prince organization remained within the Nissan group even though it disappeared as a car brand. It still exists today as a sales organization for Nissan automobiles within Japan. She also obviously plays a role in Nissan's development department.
