Gernot Minke

Gernot Minke (born April 8, 1937 in Rostock ) is an architect , specialist book author, painter , graphic artist and retired university professor.

Architect, researcher and university professor

Minke studied architecture from 1957 to 1964 at the Technical University of Hanover and at the Technical University of Berlin . From 1964 to 1968 he was Frei Otto's research assistant at the Institute for Light Structures at the University of Stuttgart . In 1970 he received his doctorate from the University of Stuttgart as Dr.-Ing . with a thesis on the efficiency of structures .

From 1974 until his retirement in 2011 he was a professor at what is now the University of Kassel , where he founded the research laboratory for experimental building and carried out over 40 research and development projects in the areas of building with clay, building with straw bales, green roofs and low-cost housing headed. Since 1979 he has been working as a freelance architect for ecological building. He became known as a pioneer in the field of green roofs, load-bearing straw bale construction and vault constructions made of clay bricks and straw bales. So far he has built 50 different clay vaults around the world.

Artist and painter

For the documenta 14 in Kassel , he created next to the art school the object Earth-Space-Sound , a recorded with sound art Lehmkuppel room, hung in the six meditation Pictures of Minke.

The painter and graphic artist Minke quotes abstract landscapes in surreal worlds. He presented u. a. in Berlin , Düsseldorf , Hanover , Kassel , Wiesbaden and Buenos Aires .

Gernot Minke lives in Kassel.

Textbook author

Minke published over 300 articles in specialist journals at home and abroad and numerous specialist books. His manual for earth building is internationally regarded as the standard work of earth building and has appeared in 11 languages, the manual for straw bale building (co-authors Friedemann Mahlke and Benjamin Krick) in 6 languages.
