Jacques Charles René Duchesne

Jacques Charles René Achille Duchesne (born March 3, 1837 in Sens , Yonne department , † 1918 ) was a French general .

Duchesne was promoted to captain in 1864 and took part in the battle of Spichern with this rank in August 1870 . After Metz was surrendered , he came to Germany as a prisoner of war. In 1883 he was sent to Tongking , where he distinguished himself by taking bac-ninh and hung-hoa . In 1884 Duchesne was made a colonel and took command of the landing forces against Formosa (the former name of Taiwan) in the Sino-French War .

On his return to France he was made Brigade General in 1888 and Division General in 1893 . In December 1894 he was appointed commander in chief of the armed forces sent to Madagascar . There he penetrated Tananarive on September 30, 1895 and forced the queen to recognize French patronage. After his return to France in March 1896 he took over the command of the 5th Army Corps in Orléans and in 1899 the 7th Army Corps in Besançon . In 1900 he was appointed to the Supreme War Council.
