Joseph Hans Bunzel
Joseph Hans Bunzel (born September 20, 1907 in Graz , † January 14, 1975 in Buffalo ) was an American sociologist and psychologist of Austrian origin. He became known through his research contributions to gerontology and especially gerontophobia .
Bunzel studied sociology and psychology at the University of Vienna , the University of Burgundy , the Sorbonne in Paris and the Johns Hopkins University, and earned diplomas in both subjects. After Austria's annexation to National Socialist Germany, he emigrated to the USA in 1938, where he studied test psychology at the University of Pittsburgh from 1942 to 1944 . In 1945 he became a US citizen.
After various activities in the municipal and state health administration, Bunzel became professor of sociology in 1956 and taught at various universities until 1967. From 1967 until his death he was a professor at the State University of New York in Buffalo .
