Granite bunker type 1, No. 1 of the Soviet Army at Großenhain airfield

The former special weapons warehouse in Großenhain at the Großenhain airfield is a bunker facility . It was used as a military structure by the Soviet armed forces for the temporary storage of special weapons during the Cold War .

background

The two bunkers, shortly after the withdrawal of the Russian troops in 1994. The loading ramp in front of the bunker has already been torn down.

In the event of war, aircraft should be used as a carrier of nuclear ammunition against targets in the enemy hinterland. The nuclear weapons depots required for this were set up on or in the immediate vicinity of military airfields . They are characterized by special protection against electromagnetic hazards . There were at least three different types of this bunker system in the area of the former GDR .

In the Saxon town of Großenhain there was a Soviet military airfield from 1945 to 1993, on which the 105th fighter-bomber division of the group of the Soviet armed forces in Germany was stationed. A granite 1 variant of this type of bunker complex was built here between 1972 and 1974. The components required for this were delivered at night from what was then the People's Republic of Poland for reasons of confidentiality .

construction

The interior of the bunker consists of precast concrete parts.

The special weapons store consisted of two bunkers, each with its own engine room. They were put together from several circular precast concrete parts to form a tube , comparable to the construction of a tunnel . The floor was then poured with concrete to create a level base. The bunker was closed with a steel pressure door . The two bunkers were connected by a loading ramp.

The security area within the military airfield was triple fenced. The innermost fence consisted of erected sand plates, the two outer fences of barbed wire. At night the entire property was completely illuminated. The bunker complex was secured by a special guard from the Soviet secret service KGB .

present

After the withdrawal of the Soviet troops by 1993, the airfield was handed over to the Free State of Saxony . In 2000, a citizen interested in military history took over the former special weapons store as a garage for several vehicles. The bunker complex was then largely restored to its original state and placed under monument protection in 2004 . Today the exhibition on the history of the Großenhain airfield from 1913 to the present is located in bunker number 1 , and in bunker number 2 there is a special radio station for the Großenhain radio amateurs .
