action

Young Lila comes back to Germany after an exchange year in the USA and falls in love with Chriz. She doesn't know that this is a hip young rock star who has lots of posters hanging from her little sister Luzy's room. Lila and Chriz first meet in a botanical garden where Lila is about to steal a rare plant for a friend. When Chriz tells her that he is the lead singer of the band 'Berlin Mitte', she thinks he's just joking. The two spend the evening together, and Lila offers Chriz to sleep in her sister's room, who is on an outing with her mother and her new boyfriend. The three of them come back sooner than planned and Luzy finds her crush in her bed. Chriz is late anyway and is picked up by his manager Paul and the bodyguard Horst. Lila now has to accept who he is.

Lila's friend Nike gets her an autograph appointment so she can speak to Chriz again. But he treats her like a fan in front of the rest of the band and the manager. Lila is disappointed. Shortly afterwards she receives a letter from Chriz with two tickets for his concert and an apology. Lila gives the tickets to her sister, but finally has to go because Luzy is still too young and without her shouldn't see the concert. Lila is skeptical at first, but ends up having fun. Chriz performs a song in which she recognizes herself and even mentions her name in it, whereupon she forgives him. After the concert, the two of them go out to eat in Japanese and finally end up in his hotel room, where Lila stays overnight. When the manager Paul wants to throw her out the next morning - with the words "Groupies don't stay for breakfast" - he realizes that Chriz is serious about Lila. He reminds him of his contract, which says he has to be officially single.

At home, Lila tells her best friend about the night on the phone, and Luzy overhears her. This tells everything in the school of a friend and at noon the story is in the media. It's a catastrophe for Chriz's entire team, and they want to portray it as if Lila made it all up. Chriz wonders about the details known to the press and accuses Lila of selling him and deliberately harming him. She can't believe that he even trusts her to do something like that and regrets having met him.

Luzy knows she made a bad mistake and confesses to Chriz that she was chatting. Chriz immediately goes to see Lila and bursts into her school lesson. He wants a relationship, but she's skeptical. She doubts his feelings and doesn't think it can work. After all, he is on the verge of a three-month tour through the USA and his band is on the verge of an international breakthrough. Chriz has to accept that and makes his way to the airport. Lila changes her mind and follows him. The gate is already closed and Chriz is on the plane. Only because he asks to open the doors of the plane again and throws one last hopeful look at the airport does he see Lila, and the two hug each other. Lila tells him she'd like a happy ending, to which Chriz replies that this is just the beginning. The film ends with Stumblin 'In , sung by Chriz and Lila in a duet on the beach.

production

Groupies don't stay for breakfast based on an idea by the two authors Kristina Magdalena Henn and Lea Schmidbauer . For both women, the project marked the first collaboration on a full-length feature film. After a pitch they further developed the script together with the two producers Ewa Karlström and Andreas Ulmke-Smeaton from SamFilm Munich , which was later to take over the production of the film. After completing the second version of the script, Marc Rothemund was hired as a director. He had already worked with Karlström and Ulmke-Smeaton on his directorial debut The Strange Behavior of Sexually Mature Big City People During Mating Season (1999). Eight more versions of the script were made before filming began.

A large part of the filming took place in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Berlin.

The shooting lasted 40 days and was started on August 11, 2009 in Berlin . In the capital, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Potsdamer Platz , the Mercedes-Benz Arena , Berlin-Tegel Airport , the Botanical Garden and a residential building on Fuggerstrasse in the Schöneberg district served as the setting. The final scene was filmed on October 13, 2019. The project received production and distribution funding from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFFB), the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), the German Film Funding Fund (DFFF) and the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB). The film was initially supposed to be Alles für Lila , but was changed due to its similarity to the film adaptation of the novel Lila, which was published in the previous year, but Lila in Groupies Don't Stay for Breakfast . The title comes from a text passage from the script.

Casting was the responsibility of Caster Uwe Bünker. Rothemund brought Ullman up early in the casting process as the main actor, but after a successful audition he still had to convince of his singing talent. Fischer, on the other hand, was only cast late in pre-production after she had not been able to keep the first appointments due to other obligations. She was ultimately hired after a joint screen test with Ullmann. The role of Bodyguard Horst was written into the script especially for Michael Keseroglu at the director's request , after Rothemund had seen his portrayal in the youth drama Gangs (2009). Bravo photographer Bernd Jaworek could also be engaged , who not only took part in the film as a small actor, but also contributed motifs for tour posters, posters and CD covers.

music

The film music for groupies don't stay for breakfast comes from composer Gerd Baumann . Kostja Ullman, who had never had to sing in a production before, took singing lessons in preparation for the shooting for his role as lead singer of a rock band. Jane Comerford , lecturer and front woman for the band Texas Lightning , acted as his vocal coach. He also learned to play a guitar. The German-language songs interpreted in the film by Ullmann and his fictional band Berlin Mitte were composed by music producers Roland Spremberg and Michael Beckmann , among others . Both the sound and the image of the quartet were significantly influenced by the Magdeburg pop-rock group Tokio Hotel , which was enjoying great commercial success in Germany at the time.

Reviews

Various critics recognized parallels with the US-American-British film comedy Notting Hill from 1999 or described groupies not even staying for breakfast as its German variant.

Leading actress Anna Fischer received positive reviews for her play in the film without exception.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts described the feature film in his review as "really good cinema that puts most modern Hollywood comedies right in its pocket" and is looking for "unparalleled quality, not only in Germany". The production is "a very sympathetic comedy right down to the very last scene, which wins over the audience with lots of little ideas, its bold (but not outrageous) manner and lots of Berlin local color". Peters also rate the game by Anna Fischer, Kostja Ullman and Nina Gummich positively. The chemistry between the main actors is right "from the first encounter in the flowerbed".

Kino.de critic Margret Köhler found that Rothemund mixed "a magical fairy tale with all the ingredients for a feel-good movie" that appeals to viewers across generations. Despite heartbreak and lovesickness, "humor, jokes and comic situations pop like champagne corks, the chemistry between the swarm of girls Ullmann and the lively Fischer [...] is right down to the last fiber of the body. The tender story is also an ardent ode to Berlin and its swing. The [...] hits by music producer Roland Spremberg, who has already celebrated two number one albums with a-ha , provide the ultimate sound kick for this hip mix ”.

Stern editor Sophie Albers called groupies a “German romantic comedy that actually does everything right” for breakfast . The film succeed "the feat of lightness that does not lose the ground out of sight" and directed to "all Twilight - Tokio Hotel -and- Bravo fans." The fact that it works “so well” is of course down to the main actors, “in addition to the wonderful cast down to the smallest role. The chemistry between Ullmann and Fischer is just right. ”Fischer also plays himself a little free. Rothemund also delivered a successful declaration of love to the city of Berlin with the feature film.

Julian Hanich from the Tagesspiegel judged that the comedy tells a "hair-raising, unbelievable story" that still has charm. The film is “jam-packed with sunny postcard idylls” and has “perhaps the stupidest title since The Strange Behavior of Sexually Mature City dwellers during the mating season , but somehow groupies do not exude a friendly charm for breakfast - and that is mainly due to the two main actors . Anna Fischer has big eyes, funny teeth and a face that sometimes reminds of Juliette Binoche and sometimes of the young Gudrun Landgrebe . Kostja Ullmann wrests a credible presence from his slender boy group body even in the stage scenes. That's enough for a hundred moody minutes. "
